My friend passed away She had bone cancer I was afraid of her illness And left her when she needed me most She first lost all her hair She still wore her make up She still listened to good music Then they found a problem in her leg She got used to the prosthetic limb pretty quickly But she had a hard time accepting what had happened Her style changed Her humor changed But her hope lingered on At best it was childish and optimistic At worst, it was sardonic Her short hair was a reminder of a battle she had won But eventually the cancer came back Depleted her strength And got away with everything It's time to find out which memories are real And which ones are dreams I cannot sleep And I cannot remember He cannot fathom how much Together in darkness The voices He listens to the train by the railyard The grass moves but the wind is silent An emptiness beyond imagination Beyond our dimension Who's to feel? Who's to say? Who's to decide what we want with our eyes shut? With our eyes shut With our eyes shut Is this not what you wanted? Is this not how you expected to feel? I don't think I miss you But I had a dream You were holding hands And it became a nightmare My shadow is keeping up I'd hang the pictures of those I consider close And my piano echoes solitarily Songs of longing Songs of despair The windows rumble with each chord The house is breathing Sweet kisses from before In this very place Stray cats roam at dusk Fallen leaves from a barren fig They left no matter what I did Grayscale night fades to phosphene dance Someone at the edge of my bed "You do not exist" I say And they know And they are at the end of my bed And they know Long live the drugs which spoke the truth when we were gone Long live the air we shared that gave us our shallow breaths Long live the coats of fur which fed us when we were poor Long live the stellar dome, a blanket where we hid our throats Unaware Unbalanced Unconnected Undexterous Unearthly Unforthcoming Ungodly Unhinged Unidentified Unjust Unknown Unlamented Unmatchable Unnourished Unorthodox Unpromising Unquiet Unrelenting Unsung Untamed Unused Unvoiced Unworthy Unxious Unyielding Unzealous
